NEWCOMERS

Guide: Living in Canada

Your first steps to settle in, explained simply.

Moving to Canada is a big change. Many resources, most of them free, are there to help you. Here are the essentials, with official Government of Canada links — and the AMAC community is here to help.

STEP 1

Get your SIN

Your Social Insurance Number is required to work and to access government programs and benefits. Apply as soon as you arrive — in person, online or by mail, free of charge.

STEP 2

Find housing

  • Ask family, friends and the community.
  • Contact a newcomer settlement agency.
  • Check listings online, in newspapers and community centres.
  • Walk around neighbourhoods looking for “For rent” signs.

STEP 3

Health care

Permanent residents: register with your province’s public plan to get a health card (OHIP in Ontario). Temporary residents: private insurance can provide coverage.

STEP 4

Find a job

  • Job Bank, Indeed and company career pages.
  • Job fairs and placement agencies.
  • Your network: family, friends, community.
  • Free résumé help services.
